Hey! Erika here! You still remember me, right? …I drew all the pink comics on this site for the first, like, 8.5 years of its existence? Yeah, that was me!

Well it’s been a while and I thought it was about time I gave you all an update on where I’ve been and why!

After nearly a decade of working on OJST non-stop, I was feeling preeeeetty burnt out so I’ve been taking the last seven months to switch gears for my creativity and health. What does one do when they take a break from their long-running, deeply personal and frequently autobiographical comic series? One starts a new deeply personal, entirely autobiographical graphic novel, of course!

over on my Patreon. I’m already past 70 rough pages! If you saw some of my earlier OJST comics that mentioned going through IOP and wondered “What the heck even is that?”, then Letters From Space Camp is for you!

Aside from comics, I’ve also been making lots of cool shit too, with the Good Posts about them going up (mostly publicly! For free!) on my Patreon. Oh, and I just made an Instagram account to show off my extremely cool and not at all unnerving Lady Lovely Locks collection, despite intense discouragement from multiple people who love and care about me. Could an unstable person make….THIS?

I rest my case.
Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know I’m still alive and I am just so incredibly grateful for and impressed by all the hard work that Matt and the newly assembled OJST Team have put into keeping this site running without my participation so that I have the time and energy to rest and work on my other projects for a bit. It’s been fascinating and heart-filling to see this place fill up with comics by other creators. Obviously, we’ve always showcased the work of additional cartoonists, but to see this site become more of a community-driven resource that shares an even wider variety of views and experiences, I dunno man, it just feels good. AND it’s making me inspired for my own OJST comics again??? I don’t wanna get anyone’s hopes up or anything, but there may be a comic or two from Matt and me again in the future.

This time away from the regular grind has been good for my brain and heart. It’s helping me see what I loved about this place and career in the first place. I feel so lucky to have produced all the OJST comics that I did and I’m proud of what this site has become and I’m so, so, so grateful I have the support to take some time to myself to recover. Thank you everyone for sticking around and all your support over the years.

Oh my gosh. That first moment of intimacy. That first time you touch. That electricity!

A huge thank you to Sayuritake for today’s adorable SFW and almost-wordless comic on these two university freshmen experiencing their first spark.

In a lot of the emails I send out to potential comic artists when recruiting for OJST, I always make a point of saying that our comics don’t need to be NSFW or pure science or autobio. “…heck we’d even want comics on hand holding; anything to do with relationships really!” – I’m glad somebody finally took me up on it =D I think today’s comic is an absolute delight, and I hope you do too!

As an update:
The team and I have been drumming up thoughts this past few weeks!

– This month will officially be OJST’s first full year without Erika at the wheel! We’re thinking it might be a great time to finally split the Patreon into two (one for her DBT mental health and autobio WIPS as she explores her book work) and the other for OJST as its own creature, with a team at the wheel (basically nothing changing, but now you’ve had a year to see us at work!)

– Further afield in March/April 2023; OJST will officially be turning 10 years old. We’re thinking of running a pledge drive around then for the site’s financial health and adding a bunch of bonus content into the current $3 tier (I think we’ll turn this into a fancy Pledge-drive-bonus Tier). I’m hoping to set up some interviews and pick up a few secret-bonus comics for it all. I listen to a bunch of things on the Maximum Fun network, and I like how they handle the whole ‘one month a year – they plug a drive’, so I want to channel some of that energy! Heck, we’re artist-owned, audience supported, just like them, why can’t we make that work too!!!

– We’re ALSO thinking about the winter; when our Sponsorship will be up for grabs again. Gotta work on filling that out! Do reach out if this is something that interests you!

Today’s week one of two sexy story comics lined up. Erika’s been doing better and is finally out of the Intensive Mental Health Outpatient Program (updates on her Twitter, Instagram and Patreon). Which is great news! Next step is waiting in line for the hospital’s DBT program. We somehow didn’t manage to fall behind on our book work and are progressing pretty well!

I always feel like I ought to be apologizing for such a long stint of Erika and me not producing comics on here. But every time I get to post a new creator’s work or a topic that’s fresh with a new perspective, I feel like it makes the site more valuable and more powerful. It still blows my mind that through affiliate links, Patreon, book sales and sponsorship we can afford to run this free website for making and sharing positive sex comics in all their forms. Anyway, all this guest comic time is affording Erika and I book-working time, and this thing’s a beaut. We’re so proud of it so far, and we’re so close to being done with this 140 page beast!

Ok, as for mental health stuff… I’ve been posting sporadically about my experiences on Instagram and Twitter when the mood strikes, and posting autobio comics about it on Patreon. I finished up the Intensive Outpatient Program in August and I’ll be starting a longer term Dialectical Behavior Therapy program through the hospital in October that’ll last about six months.

I know I’m supposed to say something, like, encouraging here. You know. “If you’re struggling… reach out! Get help!” or “It’ll get better!” or something. I’m not really feeling that right now, though? I mean, I’m not feeling the opposite of that either. I’m just… here. I’m here. I’m putting in the time and I’m doing the work and I’m tired. It’s hard. If you’re struggling with your mental health, jesus, you have all my empathy and I hope you can get the help that you need. Because getting that outside, structured help from people who really do understand what you’re dealing with really can make all the difference. For Americans, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has a hotline to call and for you international folks, google a combination of “mental health resources” and the name of your area. I dunno. There is no “cure” but there can be a reduction in suffering (Or, at least, that’s what I’m told). Take care of yourself. Do what you need to survive and find the assistance you need. Good luck.

I was a bit sad to hear recently that she plans on stopping her long time running auto bio comic, so that she could spend more time with the kids and try new comics. But I’m ALSO excited to see what she does next – Boum’s just a powerhouse of a comics creator and I’m sure whatever she’ll move onto will blow all our socks off. It’s also kind of a good thing for us readers? I think it can be really satisfying reading a whole and finished comic series, having the knowledge that it’s finite.

Week 5 in our break! Time for me to share with you all Alex’s incredible comic on their breast reduction. I ran into Alex’s work through Twitter a while ago and was instantly a smitten kitten.

As of writing this (a month prior to the comic going up), Alex is open for commissions – I’d strongly encourage you to check it out, while you drop them a hello or two =)

Today’s comic leans pretty hard into the autobiography and doesn’t go into the specifics of the different surgeries available, the ups n downs, nor the recovery. If this is something your keen to look into, start to talking with doctors and do lots of research. Today’s comic isn’t going to be your guide. It’s just Alex’s story. Hopefully, we’ll pick up more comics on this subject in the future.

Portland has been under a cloud of smoke this past week, so bad that we’re unable to even step foot outside and have to sleep in our useless-for-covid-but-good-for-smoke n95 masks (granted, so many folks on the west coast are having it worse). I mean, it’s in keeping with the 2020 theme and, at this point, it sort of feels like ‘ok yeah, sure, we should have expected this’. The time off we wanted to take last week? Disappeared into a haze of depression and… smoke. Things are supposed to be getting better later today with some scheduled rain. So keep your fingers crossed for us?! Hopefully, with some fresh air, we’ll bounce back into gear and a modicum of normality =)

If you’re also feeling the effects of the smoke and fires – man, our thoughts are with you. But also even if you’re NOT feeling the effects of smoke/fire – and just feeling ‘it’ – our thoughts are with you too. Things are hard!!! But you can do this. One day at a time.

Christine Wong first came across my radar when she was a mentee at Erika’s comic studio, Helioscope. She now lives and teaches in Japan, which she documents in delightful little autobio comics over on her social media accounts. Honestly, it was fun putting this one together and getting walked through a lil Japanese comic store!

As always we’re posting comics and trying to do our best, even in these difficult times. If you’ve not been to the site for a while, I’d totally recommend looking at the last handful of guest comics. The General Defense Committee Local 1 is fundraising to cover bail and other legal expenses for protesters arrested in connection to Portland demonstrations related to George Floyd, Black Lives Matter, and basically anything advocating social justice and police reform right now. Thank God there are people out there who understand how to navigate our expensive, complicated legal system and can help those who are being punished for putting their bodies and lives on the line for social change.

Quarantine Diary: Day 5

Those mermaid leggings were bought on sale from Ambrie.com after a very well-targeted ad on Instagram was placed in my feed. Well played, The Algorithm. Well played.

Matt and I were just going to skip an update this week but then, like, I felt bad about not having a comic for OJST’s readers, so instead I decided to re-use this story I drew just for my Exclusive Autobio Comics tier patrons a few months ago. If you enjoy my journal comics, hey, there’s more of them where this one came from over on Patreon.

We’ve only ever completely skipped an update once before– it was either this last Christmas or the one before that. We put up a temporary image on the site saying “be back next week!” or something and as soon as the next comic was up, we deleted the placeholder from the archives. We never got any notes from folks about it, I wonder if anyone actually saw it.

There’s an orange tint in the air from the California fires. It’s kind of pretty, in an apocalyptic-sort of way. Matt and I are doing a bunch of file and coding prep work this week before we announce our sponsors for the next year, but also… dang, man. It’s tempting to blame our exhaustion on the smokey air clogging up our lungs and slowing down our synapses, but I think we’re also simultaneously Legitimately Out of Juice, regardless of environmental factors. Not in a bad way! Just a… We’re-In-Our-Mid-To-Late-30s-And-We’re-Tired way. But also: The-Air-is-Literally-Orange-and-Smells-Like-Burning way, too.
