Susannah draws in an elegant, cartoony style with soft pencil-textured lines and a pastel-infused color palette.
Narration: The first lucid dream I ever had was not very sexy - though I did try.
Standing in a never-ending generic hallway, Susannah announces with delighted surprise, "Wait- I think I'm DREAMING right now!" She has blonde shoulder-length hair, peach-toned skin, and wears a white t-shirt, jeans, and white sneakers. "WHAAA" she warbles as her body begins to vibrate and transform, shrinking down to a third of her original size but her proportions are totally distorted. "How am I supposed to walk like this?" She asks herself in her freshly-configured body that is basically two legs with a head on top and two stumpy arms on either side. "UHG" She groans as she awkwardly waddles down a set of stairs until arriving at the bottom and suddenly her body has returned back to its normal state again. "That's better." She says in relief, and then her eye is caught by an attractive man walking past her. "Ooo! I'm going to make out with that random dude!"
She grabs him by the arm with a YANK!
As they smoosh their faces together to make out, their facial features slide into unnatural formations like a Picasso painting and she thinks, "This is... bizarre."
Narration: While the content of my dream wasn't very exciting, the feeling of agency was.
Undeterred, she presses the tip of her finger to her chin, thinking "HMMM" as she excitedly contemplates what her next lucid dreaming options may be.

Narration: Because lucid dreaming isn't just having a vivid dream - it's becoming aware that you're dreaming while still asleep.
"Wait... bananas can't talk." She realizes, mid-conversation with a human-sized anthropomorphic banana. Then looking at her hand, she wonders, "And why do I have six fingers?? OMG THIS IS TOTALLY A DREAM!"
Narration: This awareness means that you can often influence how the dream unfolds.
"Let's banana can-can!" She exclaims as she joins a chorus line of human-sized bananas doing just that.
Narration: As I began to lucid dream more frequently, I went through the common wish fulfillment exercises that lucid dreaming adults often do. Seeing a deceased loved one...
"Hi mom" Susannah says as she gives a deep hug to a blonde woman in a lavender flannel shirt and jeans as they stand in a kitchen.
Narration: flying...
High in the sky, Susannah sores among the clouds.
Narration: ...and having sex.
Still flying over the ocean, she looks down to see a beautiful mermaid sunning herself on a rock. "I wonder what it would be like to have sex with that mermaid!" Susannah wonders.
Carefully cropped, the reader can see just the bottom half of Susannah's legs and the mermaid's tail as they twist and grind on the sand, vocalizing, "yes ohhhh ahhhh AHH OH!!" until the real life Susannah wakes herself up with a gasp in her real bed.

Narration: Sex dreams were even part of some of the first scientific experiments to prove the existence of lucid dreaming in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Caption: Standford University, 1983
A woman reclines in a comfortable-looking bed in an observational room in a lab. A clinician in a white lab coat and holding a clipboard narrates to her different eye movement patterns, looking left and right.
Narration: Researcher Stephen LaBerge directed a participant in his new study* to use a pattern of eye movements to signal the onset of her lucid dream.

Narration: Why? Most muscles are inactive during REM sleep, but not those controlling the heart, lungs, and eyes. Researchers leveraged this fact to track and communicate with sleeping research subjects.**

Narration: The participant, Miranda (not her real name), was told to use the eye pattern again when she began sexual activity...
As the real Miranda sleeps in her bed, a fully naked Dream Miranda fucks a bearded man and until she exclaims in delight, "OH!"
Narration: ...and then once more after achieving orgasm.
Narration: LaBerge found that Miranda's respiration rate and vaginal blood flow increased in a way that corresponded to her dream signals - and indicated that her dream orgasm was physiologically comparable to a waking one.

Narration: Lucid sex dreams can be a way to move outside of societal norms and explore sexuality and fantasy freely in a safe, STD-free space. Two friends shared their own experiences of this with me:
Over a montage of shadowy, buxom, female figures, an anonymous voices shares, "I have a ton of lucid sex dreams! Being a queer woman in a monogamous marriage to a man, I often have sex dreams with women. They're not identifiable - just shadowy figures. Often I'll end up with someone who's not my 'type' in real life and I'll be like - well, enjoy! Maybe you'll like something different."
A different friend narrates, "As a child, I learned lucid dreaming to wake myself up from recurring nightmares."
A masked man with black gloves uses a crowbar to force open the friend's window as her child-self looks terrified inside.
She continues, "When I was exploring my sexuality in my sexuality in my 20s, I thought: why wake myself up? I'll just stay in the dream..."
The teenage version of herself stands confidently and expectantly as the burglar climbs in through the window and is surprised to find her. Embracing in a passionate kiss, her narration continues, "...and get it on with the bad guy!"
A cartoon penis and balls looks sad as she concludes, "Unfortunately... the penises are always a bit like wet clay."

Narration: While there are many articles and books explaining techniques for inducing lucid dreaming, it's not as straightforward as some make it seem:
Caption: 1. Perform reality checks

Narration: Lucid dreaming, like many things in life, is improved with dedicated practice.
Deep in a starry sky, a random assortment of creatures and objects swim by. Among them are a mermaid with long blond hair, a sock, a jar of peanut butter, a cock and balls, a naked man wearing only a clear glass helmet, a nude woman wearing only big white astronaut gloves and her own glass bowl helmet, and a floating globe-breast with planetary rings orbiting it.
Narration: Relinquishing control and improvising with your own consciousness can be an exhilarating, bizarre experience - but one that I'm excited to continue exploring.
