I had such a great time talking with Gina, who’s an absolutely wonderful and delightful person. She’s really doing the work to keep erotic comics alive and artists paid for it. I’m so glad I could have OJST and FF shake hands and partner up for this interview.

Gina Biggs is a cis woman with medium length and light-coloured hair, she sports catseye glasses with a strawberry necklace, a black t-shirt tucked into a cute floral long skirt.
Jey is furiously drawing cute sexy character ideas on some paper while saying “Inspiration has STRUCK! What a super sexy story I’ve got on my hands! I’ll add some of this, a little of that—”
Jey pauses. “—Hm. Where will it live though? The internet is just rife with censorship right now, there’s not many places I COULD post it… WAIT!”
They run off, pieces of paper in their hand and flying and falling behind them as they run into a pink area instead of their usual mint green while saying “I know JUST who to talk to about this!”
Jey enters a room and gestures happily to their friend Gina Biggs, who sits at a computer desk with a tablet she’s working on with two ladies smooching and the Filthy Figments website on the larger monitor. Jey introduces her “My good pal and fellow sexy comics enthusiast Gina Biggs and her site Filthy Figments!”
Gina smiles and responds “Hey Jey~”

Jey continues with “Gina has been working on uplifting and making a space for erotica comic artists since 2010, an incredible one-woman team running one of the last holdouts for sexy fiction comics!”

Gina herself continues her introduction by saying “My primary focus is on love, romance, and self-discovery. I like to explore the many facets of human connections, and love in any form, whether it be romantic, platonic, spiritual, whatever it is. I’ve been doing that for a million billion years, and then in 2010 I launched Filthy Figments, an erotic comics subscription site.”
Jey rubs their chin and asks “Say Gina, I’ve been an FF artist for a looong time, but how did it all come to be? I’ve never heard the story.”
Gina answers “Well, if we’re going to get right down to the heard of it, I was writing a webcomic and the characters had gotten to a point where they were going to explore their relationship further, and a good friend encouraged me to draw it.”
We see a birds-eye shot of a convention centre covered in a huge blanket of snow. Gina narrates over it “Once I realized how popular that was, I reached out to a handful of friends while we’d actually been snowed in at a convention, with the idea of doing dirty comics together.”
“We wandered the empty convention, chatted with other artists, and it all just kind of came together.”
In the same flashback, we see younger Gina and a group of folks talking in an empty artist alley aisle. Gina continues to narrate “And we had, like, 50 sign-ups the first day we went live. We were floored by that! We realized that people do want to see erotica explored through a different lens.”

Gina is standing in front of a red curtain and opening it as a bright light shines out of it. Gina says “Filthy Figments gave me a way to promote people who were really doing amazing work, or really just gave a new sort of lens to things. I love being able to do that. I know that sounds gushy. But it’s the most rewarding part of it, being able to tell these stories that otherwise might not have been told. You know, some of our artists said they felt really comfortable working with our close-knit group and felt safe.”
Jey chimes in and punches the air excitedly. “You’re so friendly and respectful to everybody you work with on the site. It’s just—it’s so nice working with you. If, say, Max and I have an idea, you’re always like “Oh, hell yeah, go for it!”
Gina looks a little shy with the compliments and continues on herself “I’m so glad to hear that! I try my best! I love us all working together to boost each other up, and I’m just so glad folks really vibe with that. That’s really what I just want to keep doing.”
Jey and Gina keep chatting as the camera zooms out and comic pages flutter down all around them. Gina says “Webcomics are a way to tell these other stories. Let’s get it out there! It’s okay that it’s not in a bookstore. We have a means to be storytellers, no matter what.”
Jey excitedly adds “Max and I have gotten comments on our Filthy Figments comics, people saying to us “That’s me.” And I love that! That’s why we do it! With our goal to make old and fat characters sexy, Filthy Figments just being here to support those stories that might not be “marketable” just feels so damn good. Y’know?”
Gina continues with “Oh yeah. The media makes a big difference in people’s feelings towards storytelling in general. There’s always been such a narrow range of what you see. I’d like to tell the stories that are different, that are us, that celebrate all of us.”

Jey replies “No, that’s really lovely!” then goes on to ask “Since you mentioned you’ve been at this for a very long time,”
Gina quickly says “Yes.”
Jey continues “what has changed since you started, either good or bad?”
Gina puts her hands on her hips and answers matter-of-factly “Well, gosh! We recently updated the site, and the new things we can do are just blowing me away. But the biggest change is around the policing of what we can publish. Our avenues for getting the word out there about what we’re doing have been narrowing. Especially with the credit card companies, which control and impose their rules on everything. It’s been tricky.”
The two switch over to a desktop view, where Jey and Gina are little desktop buddies overtop of the new Filthy Figments website, showing a bit of the sexy comics in the comics archive. Jey says “The site looks incredible by the way!”
Gina gestures to it happily and says “Thank you! The changes were inspired by years of knowing I needed to do it, but not really having the resources or the knowledge to be able to do it. We’re much more mobile-friendly now, and the categorization system is just leaps and bounds better than it was before. There was a sharp learning curve, but I learned a lot about building a website, which I had always had someone else do. Now I feel like I’ll be able to keep on top of it, because I understand what’s happening on the site.”

Jey looks at Gina excitedly and asks “So, what kinds of things do you look for in an upcoming story?”
Gina clasps her hands together as hearts appear around her as she says “I’m always looking for heart in a story. I love it when it’s sexy, but I want to feel those characters’ emotions, you know?”
Jey says “Absolutely!”
Gina puts her hands to her heart as a wind blows, she happily says “Like, when I read it, it might be sexy, but is it making me feel like, “Wow, that character is feeling those feelings”? Whether it’s just being turned on, or falling in love, like—“Is this catching me in an amazing storytelling way?” while the mascots of Filthy Figments get a little hot and heavy in comic panels behind Gina.
Jey puts a finger to their chin with a smile and says “Oh, that’s wonderful. I guess you really look for sincerity, then?”
Gina excitedly responds “Yes, that’s the perfect word for it!”
Jey continues “I genuinely appreciate that that’s something you have an eye for—”
Suddenly Jey shoots their arms up in surprise and remembrance “—OH!!! I almost forgot, I had a new comic idea to pitch to you!”
Gina looks excited and says “Great, I can’t wait to read it!”
