Are you on T but still getting your period every month? Then this comic might be for you! Talking to my endocrinologist really set me on the right path of taking a progestin-only pill that finally took out that time of the month for me once and for all!

I’ve been excited to share this comic because I’m just so happy that I’ve nixed my period finally! Sometimes a low dose of T just isn’t enough to get rid of your period, but luckily there are options. I’m so grateful to my endo for helping me out and being super supportive.

T With A Side of POP Comic by Jey Pawlik, done in cool minty green tones with heavy blacks and black linework, with an addition of dark reds on page 3 and cool purples on page 4 and 5. Jey is a white nonbinary person with short black cropped hair and big rectangular glasses wearing various plain t-shirts, cozy sweaters and long sleeve tops. Jey’s endocrinologist placeholder is a woman of colour with long wavy black hair, a pleasant smile and wearing a collared shirt with an ID lanyard.
Narration: At my testosterone check-up
Jey and their endocrinologist sit in a doctor’s office. Endo asks “So, how are things?”
Jey responds happily, “Good, I’m really liking my dose and changes.”
Endo asks “And your period?”
To which Jey puts their hands on their face and looks dreadful and says “UGH! It’s decided to stick around and I’m so sick of it!! It is lighter, but it’s still there.”
Endo ponders this and says “Hmm yes, that can happen.” Then makes the suggestion “Well, we can discuss an option to try and get rid of it for good.”
Jey perks up excitedly and says “WHA—For real? I’m all ears!!”
Endo gestures to a bubble that reads “POP” in bubble letters, with a little can of pop (or soda as some people call it) she tells Jey “Alrighty, I can prescribe you a ‘progestin-only pill,’ or POP—a type of birth control pill that can suppress periods if taken back-to-back and see how that does you.”
Jey looks sceptical and responds “Birth control? Hmmm, I dunno…”

Page 2
Jey thinks about it and says “Birth control has never been something I’ve needed or looked into. Will it affect my T?”
Endo happily replies “It won’t affect any of your changes, no! The POP I’ll prescribe to you is estrogen-free. Try it for 2 months, and if it’s not for you we can try something else!”
Jey crosses their arms and says “MM—OKAY. I’ll give it a go.”
Narration: For the pills I got, a pack comes with 24 active pills and 4 inactive pills.
An illustration of the pill blister pack, showing the two different kinds of pills.
Narration: The inactive pills let menstruation occur. I don’t want that.
Narration: As per my doctor’s advice, I skip taking the inactive pills, meaning I take the active pills back-to-back. The active pills suppress ovulation, the release of eggs from the ovaries, thus halting menstruation!
A cartoonish illustration of the ovaries with a “Closed” sign over the whole business.
Narration: I have to take it at the SAME TIME every day.
Illustration of Jey’s watch and cellphone with alarms set for 12:00pm with a “Beep!” sound effect.
Narration: I set alarms on both my phone and my watch, just to be safe.
Jey is sitting at their work desk drawing on a display monitor.
Narration: 12pm works best for me because I know I’ll always be awake for it. It also doubles as a reminder to take my lunch break!
The musical sound effect “dingalingaling” comes from Jey’s phone on their desk.
Jey is surprised and says “Oh!”

Page 3
This page is seeped in a deep dark textured red and Jey is no longer in their cool mint colour scheme.
Narration: My first month was miserable. I was so crampy, irritable, headachy, and the on and off spotting really sucked.
Jey is shown clutching a hot bean bag against their lap, they look like they’re in pain.
A slightly smaller Jey is folded up a bit with their arms crossed and frowning heavily.
An even smaller Jey is nude, but we can’t see anything beyond their head in their hands and their legs curled up to their chest.
A much bigger Jey, looking sweaty and worn-out is laying on the empty red background saying in a weary tone “Bleeeeh I don’t know if I can go on. Maybe I should stop…?”
Jey’s endo appears in the regular cool mint colour in her own panel over the dark red with a determined fist up saying “There’s a chance it may be rough at first, but it should pass within a month. If not, make an appointment and we can chat about it. Don’t give up!”
A tiny mint green Jey perks up away from the deep red background. Their fists in the air saying “NO. It’ll be worth it to never have a period again!! I can do this!”

Page 4
Narration: One month later…
Jey, back in their regular mint green colours looks surprised and happy, and says “Oh! Huh, I feel a lot better now. Like a LOT better.”
Narration: As time goes on I start to feel more normal. A new normal. A good normal.
Jey sits at their work desk drawing.
Narration: I fall into a routine
Narration in smaller text: for the most part.
Jey is out and about with a loud beep beep beeping behind them. They search their satchel and say “OOPS, I left it at home.”
Narration: And I think
Jey is posed like they’re waiting for something. They think “Is—is it gone? Is it actually gone?”
A big open illustration of a nude Jey with their hands over their chest and a big flower over their bottom bits. The background behind them is cool and purple with a galaxy theme including hand drawn stars.
Jey thinks “I never thought of myself as someone who had a lot of period dysphoria. That maybe wasn’t… completely true after all. Now that it looks like it’s gone for good my body feels lighter and more “mine.”

Page 5
Narration: At my check-up two months later
A similar layout to the first page, where Jey and their endo are sitting in a doctor’s office. Endo asks “So, how are things?”
Jey excitedly responds “Great! It really worked!”
Jey puts their hands to their face in a happy expression with flowers floating around them. They tell their endo “It was rough at first, but now I can’t imagine ever going back. Like a burden has finally been lifted.”
Endo claps her hands together and replies “Oh, I’m so happy to hear it!” then asks “Any side effects?”
Jey points to a panel from page 4, the scene where they left the pills at home, and says “After that first month, nothing! But, if I miss it by a day, I’ll get crampy and maybe have some spotting.”
Endo puts a fist in her hand and responds “Yeeeaaah, your ovaries are waiting for that moment. So when you do forget they’re like GO GO GO!”
A big panel of Jey and their endo clinking to cans of pop together over a similar purple galaxy background like in page 4. Jey says “Now, POPs aren’t perfect, I mean—what is? Am I right? But not having my period again?! HUGE! INCREDIBLE!”
Narration: Even if T couldn’t dispose of it, I’m glad I can take my T with a side of POP.
