Gender Euphoria by Evan Clamors

Thank you so much to Evan for sharing his personal perspective with all of us here at OJST, it is a real joy to be let into such a vulnerable, beautiful place in your experiences.

You can find the awesome Evan and his work here! Be sure to drop him a word of thanks and support if you like this personal comic!

Erika’s back up and moving, so we’re back to making the comic this week! It’s… exciting? I’m not sure that the right word, but I’ll go with it – it’s exciting to get back into our routine and schedule. These past few months have been bonkers, so it’ll be really satisfying to get boring and back into the familiar daily grind.

Hey, only 2 weeks left on our Kickstarter! Better get on that if you’ve been waiting – there aren’t gonna be any more rewards (there’s only so much we can do!), so pinch em up before they disappear ;D

Real talk tho – It’s been incredible, the support so far. Erika and I wake up each day just feeling so loved and supported by the response so far. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

What’s In A Name? by Jey Pawlik

Coming at you this month with the story of how I found my name! This is one of the questions I get a lot; how I picked a name for myself, so here’s how I did it. I hope this helps anyone who’s on the hunt for their perfect name, whatever method you pick or the name you chose will be the right one for you!

Thank you so much to our guest artist Mady G for their fantastic introduction to genderplay and for creating Spanky, The Kinkgoblin. I am in awe of their genius at that last creation. Maybe someday we should have the Anal Safety Snails and Spanky the Kinkgoblin team up in a minicomic…? But anyway! Seeing My Body As Nonbinary by Christine Suggs

Christine Suggs tells us the story of who they are and what their body has meant to them over the years! A lovely beat-by-beat play of growth and exploration and most importantly (I think) kindness for oneself. That final panel just hits so hard!

I hope you all love it as much as we do and go tell Christine how fantastic they are!

Many, many thanks to Allison “Mu” Jones for sharing her personal story about the power of spectrum sliding characters in popular culture! She’s one of my favorite artists and I’m so honored to feature her work here. No lie, my eyes got a bit prickly reading this one.

She has a Tumblr full of her gorgeous artwork, including plenty of her own spectrum slid (slided?) characters. Go check that shit out!

In some fun and exciting news – Erika and I did our numbers, and while we still haven’t paid off the whole of our Kickstarter yet (waiting on one last bill), we’re going to be using the cash we DID get to increase our guest artist page rates! From now on, we’ll be paying folks $140 a page (each comic is 4-5 pages long), and $160 a page for returning artists. As always, all the work done for OJST is creator-owned, so artists keep all the rights to their work. It’s still a long way from a professional Marvel or DC rate, but we’re still pretty proud. For just two nerds running a lil ol sex-ed webcomic, the idea that we can now pay $700-$800 for a comic is amazing.

With that in mind, we are constantly hiring for guest comics.

More of a hubaballoo to come about that in the next few days =)

The Decision to Love Myself by Jey Pawlik

Jey here to tell my story about how I decided to love my body despite my dysphoria.

It’s something I’ve always struggled with and still do from time to time but once I realised I could change some of the things that caused me the most pain, it did get more bearable. As a nonbinary person who’s not planning on going on hormones, it can be tough to engage in society, I’m glad there are some other options I can lean towards to make my body feel more like my own. Maybe I’ll even see about tattoos in the future!

Top Surgery by Jey Pawlik

Thank you so much for cracking this intimate topic open, Jey!

As ever if you’re interested in this procedure, do a bunch more research on your own too! Prices, doctor-consultations, surgeon’s methods; all that stuff changes with time and location. Jey’s comic is an awesome primer from someone with first-hand experience, but might not reflect the hoops you have to jump through yourself. We recommend reading up about ‘mastectomies’ and ‘subtotal mastectomies’. Scarleteen also has a good piece focused on surgical transition options from 2016 (and a smaller piece focused on subtotal mastectomies.) But finding something more current and dialed into your local options would probably be a better place to start (try and find your nearest local LGBTQ+ support group and reach out).

You should all take note too, because Mady G’s been working on a Queer health comic book with our pals at Limerence. Binders by Jey Pawlik

We’re super excited to finally have a comic on binders! These things are important, transformative and powerful, we’ve wanted to have a comic on them for years, but don’t have enough personal experience with them at all. Thankfully, awesome Jey has stepped up and gotten us this great introduction, we hope it’s helpful for all of you looking to start binding!

Go say hi to Jey! Check out their webcomic and maybe drop them a buck or two on Patreon. I know they’re planning on selling the originals to this comic too at some point, so if you’re keen, follow them on Twitter too! Jey also asked that we drop this handy link to the Binding Health Project survey

Shirtless At Last by Jey Pawlik

Hey y’all, summer is on its way and I wanted to share a real good moment I had last summer when I went swimming for the first time since I had top surgery. I was eight months post-op at the time. It was a moment I was looking forward to for years and I’m so happy that I get to experience this every summer from now on!

A note: if you’re getting or have gotten top surgery make sure you wear sun screen with a SPF of 30 to 50 for the first year or two. Sun exposure can darken scars permanently, making them more noticeable. For the sake of this comic I did not include sunscreen but I was very diligent on wearing it.

Dating Games by Rieroo

Rieroo shares with us their experiences of exploring the scary world of romance with the aid of Dating Games! It’s a familiar experience for many, of developing romantic interest and then making soft tentative plays to explore that world in the safe space of digital games. What a lovely little piece that I feel is hopeful and helpful for anyone starting out themselves. Dating games can be such a wonderful world to start your exploration in.

Click on a link below and tell Rieroo that they’re fab. I’m honored they felt like they could share with us such a personal slice of autobio! In their pages you can find a whole bunch of other rad Eldrich-creature-work too =D It’s awesome.

  • Twitter

Today’s comic reminded me of this gem of a comic by Molly Ostertag on Dragon Age that we got back in 2015, dang, how time flies!

I’m trying to scratch my brain to see if there are any dating games I truly connected with recently that I can recommend here in the footer… But I’m coming up slim. Sureeee, my heart felt pangs for residents in Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, but was it romantic for me?… I’m not sure, not really. I think for me, I’ve always enjoyed a more voyeuristic POV; Sims games with the limits removed or, heck, even Rim World with a horny mod or two. Getting to create little characters and watch them fall in love? Now we’re talking.

What I’m trying to get at is that games are amazing and that there are a hundred different ways to explore relationships and that–

–OH WAIT! I remember now – The last time I felt pangs for characters in a 1-to-1 dialogue game was Scarlett Hollow by our very own Abby Howard and Tony Howard-Arias! Legit spent FAR too much of my time romancing Stella and later Oscar, and not enough time solving the game ;D Very much recommended if you like your romance with a big dash of SPOOKY.

Dilating After by Naomi Rubin

Before we get to our regularly scheduled blog post, we just want to share a few resources with people who support the protestors and Black Lives Matter: Ways to Help, Educate Yourself, 43 Bail Funds You Can Absolutely Support Right Now, and Understanding and Dismantling Racism: A Booklist for White Readers (Remember, you can borrow these books from your library for free!). And for those who feel overwhelmed by everything and all the different calls to action, Erika found this quote especially helpful:

Resistance is NOT a one lane highway. Maybe your lane is protesting, maybe your lane is organizing, maybe your lane is counseling, maybe your lane is art activism, maybe your lane is surviving the day.

Do NOT feel guilty for not occupying every lane. We need all of them.

And now, on to our post to go with today’s comic…

We’re super honored to have Naomi Rubin share this vulnerable and personal slice of life with us today! She hit it out of the park with this comic that’s both educational and personal, while standing on its own as just a beautiful piece of art. It is such an honor to showcase her work!

Go say hi to Naomi or even better yet, be awesome and drop her a dollar or two on Patreon! Although, Naomi’s requested that if your feeling generous, to consider putting your money elsewhere: Black Visions Collective & Bail Fund Sites.

Hair Confidence by Devils

Devils debuts on OJST with this sweet, personal story about cutting her hair short for the first time! Man, reading this took me back to the first time I shaved my head in college and what a transformative experience that was. At the start of the quarantine, I decided to let my hair grow out until I got vaccinated. By the time I was getting my shot, my hair was well past my shoulders and I had spent the last year under lockdown not recognizing myself in the mirror. Finally, getting to hack all that heavy hair away earlier this month? I know what Devils means when she writes “It was like the haircut had freed me.” in her comic.

People have such deeply personal relationships with their hair and we’ve got a few more comics on the topic in our archives here at ol’ Oh Joy Sex Toy! Give’em a gander:

Quite A Dish by Curleebunny

We’re on the ramp-up to Valentine’s Day! So Curleebunny is here with an adorable and silly sexy comic, to warm you all up with. We hope you like it! It was just a pleasure to see in development, and I’m so happy you all get to see it now!

Just a reminder to any of you out there; We’re on the hunt for more and new guest comics. Especially comics about sex education and personal stories! Absolutely fine too if it’s a comic or subject we’ve had in the past; as we continue to develop into something more community-driven, newer and fresher voices are much needed on well-worn topics, especially on the subject of sex!

So if you’ve been wanting a chance to show up on OJST. We’d love to hear from you! Drop me an email!

ALSO – as we approach Valentine’s we get asked a lot about THE best toys to get. But thing is, Erika and I have been out/taking a break from the toy review game for nearly 6 months, so don’t have the freshest opinions. That being said. If you want to know what still lives by our bedside, the real honest to god tried-and-trues, check out our Best of from last year. It’s a real beast of a list and absolutely where I’d start when shopping.

Packer Gear TPR Packer by Jey Pawlik

Hey, y’all thanks for reading my very first review! I had a ton of fun writing and drawing this one up and I hope it gives some ideas on what to try out or look for in terms of packers. Packing isn’t for everyone, but I found that it’s a really nice sometimes thing for me!

Matthew here, to add in some links!
Thank you, Jey! You can find this specific packer in a few spots listed below, but after that, we’ve also put in the rest of OJST’s affiliated stores, as there really are a whole swath of packers out there to explore. My recommendation? If this one doesn’t grab at you, take a peek at the New York Toy Collective for some choice options (we’ve reviewed a couple of their packers in the past!)

Finally, if you want to see more of Jey’s work – and heck Why WOULDN’T YOU?!– here’s a list of the comics they’ve made for OJST!

Navigating Menstruation While Trans by Jey Pawlik

My comic this month is all about navigating periods while being trans! I’ve been wanting to do this one for a while, super excited to finally get it posted. I’m coming at this from the point of view as someone who isn’t on or planning on HRT but these are some things that helped me through some tough times and I hope it helps you as well! Periods can really suck but maybe they can suck slightly less.

Attraction

Attraction

As always, this comic is the briefest of introductions to the concept of what attraction can be, the different ways it can manifest, and how one can label it— and there are many different points of view out there! There’s so much more to learn about attraction, sexual orientation, identity labels, relationship models, and, you know. Like. Everything.

It’s a big, wide Internet, here’s a few resources to get you started:

► Attraction (Sexual, Romantic, Sensual, Aesthetic) on AVENwiki
► Romantic Orientation (including Romantic identities) on Wikipedia
► What Are Different Types Of Attraction? on BetterHelp
► Untangling a Gender, Attraction and Relationships Tangle on Scarleteen
► Hey Hot Stuff: On Attraction, Desirability, and “Types” on Scarleteen
► Just the Basics, Ace: An Asexuality Primer on Scarleteen

ALSO. This point didn’t make it into the comic, but it’s the first example I bring up when I hear about someone’s bi/pan/queer sexuality being dismissed because they don’t have equal experience with the various genders:

When a virgin cisgender teenage boy who’s never even asked a girl out yet says that he’s straight, nobody’s like “You haven’t been with a girl yet, so I don’t really believe you. You’re confused or you want attention or you want to fit in with the cool kids or you just don’t even know what you actually want.” No! They’re just like “Ok.” and they don’t give it a second thought.

And yet, when people say they are attracted to more than one gender but they haven’t had any experience with those other types of folks, it’s fairly common they’ll get that incredulous, dismissive reaction– even from other members under the queer umbrella. There’s this air of “Prove it.” from the monosexuals.

Which is a long way of saying: If folks are willing to take a self-proclaimed straight boy at his word that he’s attracted to girls even if he has no experience with them, it’d be super cool if people would extend that courtesy of belief to all the inexperienced queer population too.

Which was still a long way of saying: DUDE, JUST BE COOL ABOUT BISEXUALS!

Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis

There’s some pockets of misinformation out there that have labeled BV an STI, though it is not. BUT some STIs (gonorrhea or trichomoniasis) share the same symptoms! Plus, BV can also show up completely symptomless, which is a bugger because how can you fight it if you don’t know it’s there? So double talk to a doc if you feel something funky goin’ on with your downstairs!

During my various vaginal mishaps, I’ve frequently used Vagisil to calm down irritation, but then last year, during an absolutely hellish period of back-to-back yeast infections and/or BV (I don’t remember exactly, it was just awful), my friend gave me this free sample of Momotaro she’d been gifted and it was… the nicest thing I’ve ever put on my pussy when it was in pain??? Like, I’m a convert. Fortunately I haven’t had to use any since then, but the next time my swimsuit area starts burning (we all know it’s just a matter of time) I’m definitely gunna be reaching for that little hippie coohie cream, first. Also, the company keeps their language gender neutral, which is always a bonus.

Let’s Talk About It: The Teen’s Guide to Sex, Relationships, and Being a Human

by Erika Moen on 07/09/2020 at 1:45 pm
Posted In: Blog

Today we can finally share the cover of our upcoming Random House Graphic novel:

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT: The Teen’s Guide to Sex, Relationships, and Being a Human

Coming out January 21, 2021, you can learn more and pre-order a copy through your favorite bookseller here. This is our first book made specifically for young adults and it’s our publisher’s first nonfiction title, to boot!

When the name “Sex Education” comes up, people tend to think of biology lessons on how babies are made or of awkwardly rolling down a condom on a banana in a classroom. But what comes before condoms and babies? Teens need to know how to talk to each other about sex and relationships and boundaries and consent long before they wind up in a situation where condoms are being pulled out of pockets.

Let’s Talk About It follows an assortment of teens as they find themselves in uncharted territories, from figuring out identity to navigating consent to understanding why certain fantasies keep springing up in their minds to being rejected.

This book gives young adults the tools to make informed decisions, advocate for their needs, and respect other people’s boundaries. It’s a guidebook for people who know that life is messy and we’re all doing the best we can with the resources we have available. By sharing the kind of real life situations people inevitably find themselves in, Let’s Talk About It gives teens a vocabulary and the foresight to make thoughtful, compassionate choices when they run into their own uncharted territories.

Hey, but don’t take our word for it…

People Talk About It

“‘Let’s talk about it’ is a much needed inclusive, accessible comic guide to love and sex for teens. Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan do a great job of covering the questions young people really want answered, through dialogues between a beautifully drawn cast of characters who’re navigating their own way through this complex, confusing territory. The guidance given is warm, friendly, realistic, and clear, likely to alleviate much of the fear and shame readers have around these topics.”
–Meg-John Barker, author of A Practical Guide to Sex

“Based on Erika and Matt’s past work, I already knew that I would like Let’s Talk About It but I wasn’t prepared for how much I would love (and I mean LOVE) this book. Let’s Talk About It is a beacon of light for teenagers and parents who are doing their best to sort out hormones, bodies, sex, gender, flirting, dating, and who they are or who they love. This is what sex education at its best – accurate information, engaging characters, and a reassuring tone. Highly recommended.”
–Debby Herbenick, PhD, Professor at the Indiana University School of Public Health and author of The Coregasm Workout
