Erika’s back up and moving, so we’re back to making the comic this week! It’s… exciting? I’m not sure that the right word, but I’ll go with it – it’s exciting to get back into our routine and schedule. These past few months have been bonkers, so it’ll be really satisfying to get boring and back into the familiar daily grind.

Hey, only 2 weeks left on our Kickstarter! Better get on that if you’ve been waiting – there aren’t gonna be any more rewards (there’s only so much we can do!), so pinch em up before they disappear ;D

Real talk tho – It’s been incredible, the support so far. Erika and I wake up each day just feeling so loved and supported by the response so far. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Weathering the Storm by Ripley LaCross

Finding yourself in transition is a journey. To quote the lovely Dolly Parton: if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain!

Making changes to how I dress to at least be gendered differently came at the cost of my favorite wardrobe pieces, but I’m staying hopeful that one day I’ll don a skirt again. Whether that takes time, change, a heckton of bravery, or all three has yet to be seen. In the end, if gender is fluid, then I may just be okay with whatever pronoun the rain throws at me.

Becoming A Queer Parent by Christine Suggs

Christine is ready to become a parent, but is it ever so simple?
Todays comic is a slice of autobio, a snippet in-between; a queer person exploring what pregnancy means to themselves and the world around them. Hope you love it as much as we do!

Thank you so much Christine for the lovely piece. Christine was a here a few years ago talking about what being nonbinary meant to them! It’s a lovely little comic that goes great with this one today! Once your done reading, make sure to let Christine know they’re awesome-sauce!

We’re still holding our breathe with regards to all of the chaos and law-shenanigans and social-media-madness, that has been 2025. With things being so turbulant we’ve still not made plans for a Pledge Drive; just living week to week, and that feels like a victory.

Wearing The Skirt by Kiwi

Kiwi is here to share the all-too-common, all-too-stressful experience of meeting up with your past after transitioning. Going home can be so hard! Not knowing how people will react can keep us from ever even attempting it (ahem, sorry, family I have not seen in 10 years). But Kiwi posits a sweet future where… what if something good happened? Sometimes our vulnerability can be rewarded and bring us into more authentic connections with others and ourselves! I guess we can never know until we try. Brb, booking a flight to the Midwest…

Matt’s Additional Note!
Today’s comic was only made possible with support from our Patrons!!! Supporting us there, enables us to hire artists like Kiwi and give a positive space to make comics about sex, gender, sexuality and human connection in all of it’s different shapes and sizes. 2024 is a strange time to run a website so please join us on Patreon for exclusive posts just for you and you’ll be helping keep OJST afloat!

Hello Me by Ripley LaCross

Ripley here to get all sappy and poetic about my personal journey with HRT! It’s been one hell of a trip, full of ups, downs, snags, traverses, switchbacks, and leaps of faith. All the research in the world couldn’t have prepared me for this experience–sometimes walking in someone else’s shoes isn’t enough, you gotta change your own shoes! I look forward to where this adventure will take me next.

Permission To Dance by Kellin Sproul

In this autobiographical comic, Kellin Sproul recalls the anxiety and dysphoria he faced as a trans man in dance class and how he came to embrace his flow with the help of an inspiring teacher. June is pride month and I hope you all find your own moments to dance.

Thank you so much for opening up and sharing something like this with us Kellin!

T Dicks 101 by DarkChibiShadow

If you read DarkChibiShadow’s comic for us about a trans guy’s first BJ and wondered, “Huh, why’s his junk look like that?,” then you’ll see yourself in this comic, which explains what happens to genitals on testosterone HRT! It’s pretty easy to find before/after transition photos online, but people usually keep their pants on for them. As a person considering medically transitioning, it can be difficult to know what to expect downstairs, which is a place we don’t often want surprises. Let DCS demystify that for you!

Happy New Years friends! I wanted to round off the blog post with a note; DCS has a bunch of extra sexy comics to find elsewhere, and a brand new one that I can’t recommend enough. End the year with a pop (AND if you get it super sharpish during the winter sale, 50% off!) It’s a whole lot of comic and super sexy fun. Very much recommended.

New Year is a great time to follow us on our current socials, or heck… dropping us some support for the comic if you haven’t done so before! We only exist with your follows, clicks, shares and generosity. Want MORE DarkChibiShadow comics? ME TOO – support us and I promise to try to make it happen!

Speaking of not holding things in any longer, I’m just BURSTING to share the good news:
Ripley LaCross is the newest addition to the Oh Joy Sex Toy team!

The team has all been so taken with the two previous comics that Ripley had already done for OJST over the last few years that we decided we needed their work featured here on a regular basis, so Mx. LaCross has graciously agreed to come on board as an official staff artist with a monthly comic.

Get yourself acquainted with their work and then give a rip-roaring welcome to RIPLEY LACROSS!

The Decision to Love Myself by Jey Pawlik

Jey here to tell my story about how I decided to love my body despite my dysphoria.

It’s something I’ve always struggled with and still do from time to time but once I realised I could change some of the things that caused me the most pain, it did get more bearable. As a nonbinary person who’s not planning on going on hormones, it can be tough to engage in society, I’m glad there are some other options I can lean towards to make my body feel more like my own. Maybe I’ll even see about tattoos in the future!

Asymmetry And Me by Robogart

Robogart shares their story and embraces the beauty— and frustrations— of having asymmetrical breasts.

Asymmetry is a natural and common part of most bodies, yet it’s rarely talked about. From binders to bras and the inner struggles of fitting into societal molds, this story is for anyone who’s felt out of place in their own skin. A huge thank you to Robogart for opening up and making this incredible piece.

🎉**BIG NEWS!**🎉
We’ve officially leveled up our Patreon! It’s now a monthly subscription! No more “per-creation” madness. Now you can kick back, relax, and support our comics with just one sweet subscription each month. I can’t believe it took nearly 12 years to make the switcheroo happen and we’re ever so thankful to the Patreon team for helping us work it out. There’s still a few bumps to iron out (like seeing how it affected the bottom line and updating the tiers correctly!), BUT SO FAR SO GOOD!

Thank you ALL for the continued support! OJST only exists with your help and we’re ever so thankful. We spend these dollars on hiring artists, telling their stories, and giving the community a safe and sex positive space, and now you can help us do that smoother than ever.

***Join the Oh Joy Sex Toy MONTHLY :D Patreon to directly support us***

(OJST OG and co-founder Erika Moen also has a monthly Patron if you’d like to support her WIP comic on mental health!)

If Patreon isn’t your thing… – just email me and we’ll figure out an alternative!

FINALLY, if you’d like to help us in other non-financial ways… Help us to share our newer and updated ‘Sharable Comics’ on a social someplace! We’ve been reformatting the comics in this list slowly and surely to be ‘separated split pages’, which is just shorthand for ‘I’ve made them so they can be saved and posted again way more easily! We’d love help in posting these and getting some fresh viewership! Read more about how our license works over here!

A Two-Spirit Question by Morgan Kagesheongai

I’m so thrilled to share with you Morgan Kagesheongai’s comic on the complex intersection of hair, gender, and culture as a Two-Spirit Ojibwe! Being Anishinaabe myself, seeing this rad Woodland art style on our site is such a DREAM! The expressiveness of the lines infuses full panels with feelings in ways I don’t often find in other art.

While the little Two-Spirit here is trying to reconcile their gender expression and their cultural and spiritual expression regarding their hair, the dilemma they face is something many people experience in other contexts: What do you do when two ways you want to represent yourself conflict? Who do you turn to for answers? Can there even be a “right” answer? Learning to sit more comfortably in this in-between space of consideration is a good exercise for us all. Thank you so much, Morgan, for providing such great representation!

What Faith Reveals by Em Hoover

In a marble statue of an angel* carved over 350 years ago, Em Hoover sees his present-day, flesh and blood partner. Their beautiful form of masculinity spans the centuries, inspiring reverence and love from their admirers, from Venetian art patrons to a queer cartoonist in Texas who is experiencing the holiness of falling in love with his partner.

Connecting the Dots: KinkFest 2025 by Ripley LaCross

Last month I had the joy of attending KinkFest 2025 here on the west coast and it went WAY better than anticipated! Despite being ten times larger than SizeCon, I had such a chill time checking out as many cool classes, workshops, vendors, and shows as I could squeeze into two days. There was always so much to see and learn, way more than I could fit into a single, cohesive comic. So keep an eye out on our Patreon for those extensive notes I mentioned ;) Thanks again to KinkFest’s organizers for this unique opportunity!

In some fun and exciting news – Erika and I did our numbers, and while we still haven’t paid off the whole of our Kickstarter yet (waiting on one last bill), we’re going to be using the cash we DID get to increase our guest artist page rates! From now on, we’ll be paying folks $140 a page (each comic is 4-5 pages long), and $160 a page for returning artists. As always, all the work done for OJST is creator-owned, so artists keep all the rights to their work. It’s still a long way from a professional Marvel or DC rate, but we’re still pretty proud. For just two nerds running a lil ol sex-ed webcomic, the idea that we can now pay $700-$800 for a comic is amazing.

With that in mind, we are constantly hiring for guest comics.

More of a hubaballoo to come about that in the next few days =)

Top Surgery by Jey Pawlik

Thank you so much for cracking this intimate topic open, Jey!

As ever if you’re interested in this procedure, do a bunch more research on your own too! Prices, doctor-consultations, surgeon’s methods; all that stuff changes with time and location. Jey’s comic is an awesome primer from someone with first-hand experience, but might not reflect the hoops you have to jump through yourself. We recommend reading up about ‘mastectomies’ and ‘subtotal mastectomies’. Scarleteen also has a good piece focused on surgical transition options from 2016 (and a smaller piece focused on subtotal mastectomies.) But finding something more current and dialed into your local options would probably be a better place to start (try and find your nearest local LGBTQ+ support group and reach out).

Unlocking Character Customization by Jey Pawlik

Let me tell you about my realisation that I could change anything I wanted about myself; it really did feel like I’d unlocked character customization! Who’da thunk it, that buying a little pair of boxers could really shift my entire view on what I could change about myself. This was also back in 2013 when, for a young 22-year-old AFAB person, it felt a lot less socially acceptable to wear boxers. I’m so glad I took the plunge and levelled up!

An update, I’ll be away next month because I got MARRIED! So look out for my next monthly comic in August!

Dating Games by Rieroo

Rieroo shares with us their experiences of exploring the scary world of romance with the aid of Dating Games! It’s a familiar experience for many, of developing romantic interest and then making soft tentative plays to explore that world in the safe space of digital games. What a lovely little piece that I feel is hopeful and helpful for anyone starting out themselves. Dating games can be such a wonderful world to start your exploration in.

Click on a link below and tell Rieroo that they’re fab. I’m honored they felt like they could share with us such a personal slice of autobio! In their pages you can find a whole bunch of other rad Eldrich-creature-work too =D It’s awesome.

Today’s comic reminded me of this gem of a comic by Molly Ostertag on Dragon Age that we got back in 2015, dang, how time flies!

I’m trying to scratch my brain to see if there are any dating games I truly connected with recently that I can recommend here in the footer… But I’m coming up slim. Sureeee, my heart felt pangs for residents in Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, but was it romantic for me?… I’m not sure, not really. I think for me, I’ve always enjoyed a more voyeuristic POV; Sims games with the limits removed or, heck, even Rim World with a horny mod or two. Getting to create little characters and watch them fall in love? Now we’re talking.

What I’m trying to get at is that games are amazing and that there are a hundred different ways to explore relationships and that–

–OH WAIT! I remember now – The last time I felt pangs for characters in a 1-to-1 dialogue game was Scarlett Hollow by our very own Abby Howard and Tony Howard-Arias! Legit spent FAR too much of my time romancing Stella and later Oscar, and not enough time solving the game ;D Very much recommended if you like your romance with a big dash of SPOOKY.

Shirtless At Last by Jey Pawlik

Hey y’all, summer is on its way and I wanted to share a real good moment I had last summer when I went swimming for the first time since I had top surgery. I was eight months post-op at the time. It was a moment I was looking forward to for years and I’m so happy that I get to experience this every summer from now on!

A note: if you’re getting or have gotten top surgery make sure you wear sun screen with a SPF of 30 to 50 for the first year or two. Sun exposure can darken scars permanently, making them more noticeable. For the sake of this comic I did not include sunscreen but I was very diligent on wearing it.

Dilating After by Naomi Rubin

Before we get to our regularly scheduled blog post, we just want to share a few resources with people who support the protestors and Black Lives Matter: Ways to Help, Educate Yourself, 43 Bail Funds You Can Absolutely Support Right Now, and Understanding and Dismantling Racism: A Booklist for White Readers (Remember, you can borrow these books from your library for free!). And for those who feel overwhelmed by everything and all the different calls to action, Erika found this quote especially helpful:

Resistance is NOT a one lane highway. Maybe your lane is protesting, maybe your lane is organizing, maybe your lane is counseling, maybe your lane is art activism, maybe your lane is surviving the day.

Do NOT feel guilty for not occupying every lane. We need all of them.
—Lindss_tatic

And now, on to our post to go with today’s comic…

We’re super honored to have Naomi Rubin share this vulnerable and personal slice of life with us today! She hit it out of the park with this comic that’s both educational and personal, while standing on its own as just a beautiful piece of art. It is such an honor to showcase her work!

Go say hi to Naomi or even better yet, be awesome and drop her a dollar or two on Patreon! Although, Naomi’s requested that if your feeling generous, to consider putting your money elsewhere: Black Visions Collective & Bail Fund Sites.

Hair Confidence by Devils

Devils debuts on OJST with this sweet, personal story about cutting her hair short for the first time! Man, reading this took me back to the first time I shaved my head in college and what a transformative experience that was. At the start of the quarantine, I decided to let my hair grow out until I got vaccinated. By the time I was getting my shot, my hair was well past my shoulders and I had spent the last year under lockdown not recognizing myself in the mirror. Finally, getting to hack all that heavy hair away earlier this month? I know what Devils means when she writes “It was like the haircut had freed me.” in her comic.

People have such deeply personal relationships with their hair and we’ve got a few more comics on the topic in our archives here at ol’ Oh Joy Sex Toy! Give’em a gander:

I Just Got Tattooed by JOCKBUNS

Ah, the trans urge to take control of your body via tattoos! JOCKBUNS is here to share his personal story of the transformative power of body art! When my body feels so fundamentally unrepresentative of me, it can be a huge relief to hang artwork in this strange fleshy home I inhabit to try to make it feel more comfortable and more mine. It took me years to access gender-affirming medical care, but there are more tattoo shops than grocery stores in my neighborhood here in Portland.

Thanks so much for sharing your story, JOCKBUNS! Maybe I’ll pick up some flash on my way home from getting oat milk…

Just a reminder to any of you out there; We’re on the hunt for more and new guest comics. Especially comics about sex education and personal stories! Absolutely fine too if it’s a comic or subject we’ve had in the past; as we continue to develop into something more community-driven, newer and fresher voices are much needed on well-worn topics, especially on the subject of sex!

So if you’ve been wanting a chance to show up on OJST. We’d love to hear from you! Drop me an email!

ALSO – as we approach Valentine’s we get asked a lot about THE best toys to get. But thing is, Erika and I have been out/taking a break from the toy review game for nearly 6 months, so don’t have the freshest opinions. That being said. If you want to know what still lives by our bedside, the real honest to god tried-and-trues, check out our Best of from last year. Jey here with a review on Number One Factory’s B.J. Dildo 2.0!

I was super excited to try this one out and while it wasn’t exactly how I’d imagined it, it was still a pretty swell toy to use. I’d seen so many good reviews on this toy from other trans and nonbinary folks, but I’m starting to think I’m the outlier here.

Tentacle Grinder III by Ripley LaCross

Howdy folks! Today we’re havin’ a look-see at one of the wildest toys I’ve ever laid eyes on: the Tentacle III Grinder made by Uncover Creations.

  • Tentacle Grinder III

Grinders are still few and far between in the sex toy world, so discovering a company with such a variety of them is like striking gold! And while this particular one wasn’t everything I dreamed of, it’s still a nice treat when I desire more than an orgasm, I crave an Experience™. I recommend checking out the rest of Uncover Creation’s monstrous catalog, they’ve got knots, tentacles, ovipositors… and a suction cup mount that straps down just like these grinders and it is my new favorite thing EVER.

Becoming Molly by Molly Skyfire

I’m so thrilled to bring you Molly Skyfire’s incredible story of trans discovery and resilience! It is a ROUGH time to be trans in the U.S. right now, and this comic is a reminder that being trans comes from within us and that we cannot be legislated out of existence. The process of coming out is complicated and different for everyone, but there’s an exquisite joy to finally being in a place where you are able to get to know yourself, accept yourself, and share yourself with the world!

The harder people make that for us, the more important and life-saving these stories of resilience, acceptance, and support become. I’m deeply grateful to Molly for sharing hers with us, and I hope you find it as moving as I do!

You can find this specific packer in a few spots listed below, but after that, we’ve also put in the rest of OJST’s affiliated stores, as there really are a whole swath of packers out there to explore. My recommendation? If this one doesn’t grab at you, take a peek at the New York Toy Collective for some choice options (we’ve reviewed a couple of their packers in the past!)

Finally, if you want to see more of Jey’s work – and heck Why WOULDN’T YOU?!– here’s a list of the comics they’ve made for OJST!

Attraction

As always, this comic is the briefest of introductions to the concept of what attraction can be, the different ways it can manifest, and how one can label it— and there are many different points of view out there! There’s so much more to learn about attraction, sexual orientation, identity labels, relationship models, and, you know. Like. Everything.

It’s a big, wide Internet, here’s a few resources to get you started:

► Attraction (Sexual, Romantic, Sensual, Aesthetic) on AVENwiki
► Romantic Orientation (including Romantic identities) on Wikipedia
► What Are Different Types Of Attraction? on BetterHelp
► Untangling a Gender, Attraction and Relationships Tangle on Scarleteen
► Hey Hot Stuff: On Attraction, Desirability, and “Types” on Scarleteen
► Just the Basics, Ace: An Asexuality Primer on Scarleteen

ALSO. This point didn’t make it into the comic, but it’s the first example I bring up when I hear about someone’s bi/pan/queer sexuality being dismissed because they don’t have equal experience with the various genders:

When a virgin cisgender teenage boy who’s never even asked a girl out yet says that he’s straight, nobody’s like “You haven’t been with a girl yet, so I don’t really believe you. You’re confused or you want attention or you want to fit in with the cool kids or you just don’t even know what you actually want.” No! They’re just like “Ok.” and they don’t give it a second thought.

And yet, when people say they are attracted to more than one gender but they haven’t had any experience with those other types of folks, it’s fairly common they’ll get that incredulous, dismissive reaction– even from other members under the queer umbrella. There’s this air of “Prove it.” from the monosexuals.

Which is a long way of saying: If folks are willing to take a self-proclaimed straight boy at his word that he’s attracted to girls even if he has no experience with them, it’d be super cool if people would extend that courtesy of belief to all the inexperienced queer population too.

Which was still a long way of saying: DUDE, JUST BE COOL ABOUT BISEXUALS!

Project Spotlight:

Ok, not so much a “Project” but 8 POC Sex Educators You Should Be Following On Instagram is a great introduction to eight educators of color who are talking about sex, sexuality, bodies, self care, and more on their Instagram accounts. Follow for the beautiful photos, stay for the smart insights and nurturing words.

Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis

There’s some pockets of misinformation out there that have labeled BV an STI, though it is not. BUT some STIs (gonorrhea or trichomoniasis) share the same symptoms! Plus, BV can also show up completely symptomless, which is a bugger because how can you fight it if you don’t know it’s there? So double talk to a doc if you feel something funky goin’ on with your downstairs!

During my various vaginal mishaps, I’ve frequently used Vagisil to calm down irritation, but then last year, during an absolutely hellish period of back-to-back yeast infections and/or BV (I don’t remember exactly, it was just awful), my friend gave me this free sample of Momotaro she’d been gifted and it was… the nicest thing I’ve ever put on my pussy when it was in pain??? Like, I’m a convert. Fortunately I haven’t had to use any since then, but the next time my swimsuit area starts burning (we all know it’s just a matter of time) I’m definitely gunna be reaching for that little hippie coohie cream, first. Also, the company keeps their language gender neutral, which is always a bonus.

Acexistential by Lilaeleaf

Lilaeleaf opens up and shares with us what her asexuality means for her! A lovely moment of retrospection, self discovery and ace-representation! I think she… Matt takes a moment to look left, then right, before remembering he has no shame… Aced it.

Note From Lilaeleaf
This little comic is my personal experience with asexuality. It’s so important to me that this isn’t interpreted as the only asexual experience. Every ace person has a different story to tell, and it’s so important to listen to every voice! My aceness also ties into my gender and my experience with romance; introspection for another day, perhaps!

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

Screencap of John Oliver talking on his show, Last Week Tonight, next to a giant copy of LET'S TALK ABOUT IT, the teen sex and relationship book that Matthew Nolan and Erika Moen made.
So many heartfelt thank-yous to John Oliver and his team for featuring our book, Let’s Talk About It, on Last Week Tonight’s coverage of public libraries.

(Season 11, Episode 10. Our mention starts around the 12 minute mark)

As fans of John Oliver’s show for a decade now, it would be an understatement to say that we were stunned to discover our work on screen next to him. There may have been some tears while hearing him defend our work, but I’ll never admit it. (There were. There were tears.) It means so much to see him going to bat not just for our book, but fellow graphic novel Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe as well.

Thank you to John Oliver for making us laugh all these years and for keeping us informed of the nuance in complicated matters. Even more, thank you to the dedicated librarians who are working so hard to serve their communities even when it is a battle. We appreciate you. We owe you a coffee. Or ten.

Let’s Talk About It: The Teen’s Guide to Sex, Relationships, and Being a Human

by Erika Moen on 07/09/2020 at 1:45 pm
Posted In: Blog

Today we can finally share the cover of our upcoming Random House Graphic novel:

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT: The Teen’s Guide to Sex, Relationships, and Being a Human

Coming out January 21, 2021, you can learn more and pre-order a copy through your favorite bookseller here. This is our first book made specifically for young adults and it’s our publisher’s first nonfiction title, to boot!

When the name “Sex Education” comes up, people tend to think of biology lessons on how babies are made or of awkwardly rolling down a condom on a banana in a classroom. But what comes before condoms and babies? Teens need to know how to talk to each other about sex and relationships and boundaries and consent long before they wind up in a situation where condoms are being pulled out of pockets.

Let’s Talk About It follows an assortment of teens as they find themselves in uncharted territories, from figuring out identity to navigating consent to understanding why certain fantasies keep springing up in their minds to being rejected.

This book gives young adults the tools to make informed decisions, advocate for their needs, and respect other people’s boundaries. It’s a guidebook for people who know that life is messy and we’re all doing the best we can with the resources we have available. By sharing the kind of real life situations people inevitably find themselves in, Let’s Talk About It gives teens a vocabulary and the foresight to make thoughtful, compassionate choices when they run into their own uncharted territories.

Hey, but don’t take our word for it…

People Talk About It

“‘Let’s talk about it’ is a much needed inclusive, accessible comic guide to love and sex for teens. Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan do a great job of covering the questions young people really want answered, through dialogues between a beautifully drawn cast of characters who’re navigating their own way through this complex, confusing territory. The guidance given is warm, friendly, realistic, and clear, likely to alleviate much of the fear and shame readers have around these topics.”
–Meg-John Barker, author of A Practical Guide to Sex

“Based on Erika and Matt’s past work, I already knew that I would like Let’s Talk About It but I wasn’t prepared for how much I would love (and I mean LOVE) this book. Let’s Talk About It is a beacon of light for teenagers and parents who are doing their best to sort out hormones, bodies, sex, gender, flirting, dating, and who they are or who they love. This is what sex education at its best – accurate information, engaging characters, and a reassuring tone. Highly recommended.”
–Debby Herbenick, PhD, Professor at the Indiana University School of Public Health and author of The Coregasm Workout
